Who We Are

Partnering to build a world where all youth have equal opportunity to achieve their dreams

Development Associates is a youth led Non Governmental organization working in Kenyan informal settlement and rural areas. We focus on economic empowerment, sustainable livelihoods promotion, HIV prevention, gender and development. We believe that if young people are empowered economically, they are able to prevent HIV, get employment, stop/end GBV and build a formidable future.

Through our economic empowerment program, Development Associates train young people 16-35 living in urban slums on business ideas, self employment, and linkages to employment through a course known as Leadership, entrepreneurship and employ-ability skills/Ready to work (RTW).

Our Key Principles and Values:

Respect for diversity and inclusion. Gender balance and women and girl’s empowerment and leadership. Balance between self-reliance and interconnected communities. Sustainability and long-term impact.

Value of volunteerism within the program and more broadly. Importance of a healthy families (physical diseases, emotional and mental health). Decreased community violence, including gender-based violence and domestic violence. Support for livelihood rights—food, water, sanitation, and decent jobs. Value of partnerships within communities, across the African continent, and internationally
